On February,13,2024 the Prime Minister of India took to X (formerly known as twitter) to officially launch the nationwide free electricity scheme which was initially announced by finance minister during the presentation of this year’s Interim Budget.

The PM expressed his joy and excitement on the platform saying “In order to further sustainable development and people’s wellbeing, we are launching the ‘PM Surya Ghar : Muft Bijli Yojana’. This project, with an investment of over Rs. 75,000 crores, aims to light up 1 crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month.”

“From substantive subsidies, which will be given directly to people’s bank accounts, to heavily concessional bank loans, the Central Government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people. All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal which will further convenience.”

“In order to popularise this scheme at the grassroots, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats shall be incentivised to promote rooftop solar systems in their jurisdictions. At same time, this scheme will lead to more income, lesser power bills and employment generation for people.”

About pmsuryaghar.gov.in scheme

The scheme literally translates to ‘Solar House’ and ‘free electricity’. According to the official plan prepared and facilitated by the Ministry of New and Renewable energy, there will be free electricity provided for upto 300 units per month to the eligible households around the country by first encouraging those households to install solar panels covering upto 40% of their total cost. Thereby reducing their dependence on conventional power sources and overall financial burden.

There will be around 1 crore households that will be directly benefiting from the scheme by getting direct subsidies in their accounts and also cheap loans for the installation process. The entire process will be digitised and integrated from top to bottom at a National Online Portal.

Eligibility criteria for pmsuryaghar.gov.in Registration

• Indian citizen above 18 years of age
• Annual family income less than Rs. 1.5 Lakh
• Non-government employees
• Aadhaar card linked to Bank account is mandatory (for direct subsidy benefits)
• Must own a house suitable for solar panel installation

Process of application pmsuryaghar.gov.in Registration

1. Registration: the process starts with online registration on the official portal : pmsuryaghar.gov.in

(Submit details like State, Electricity distribution company, Electricity Consumer Number, Mobile Number, E-mail etc)

2. Log in with Consumer Number and Mobile number
3. Application for rooftop solar as per form
4. Feasibility approval from DISCOM (Distribution Company).
5. Install solar plant by any of the registered vendors in your DISCOM.
6. After installation, apply for ‘Net Meter’ by submitting the plant details.
7. Generate ‘commission certificate’ from portal after inspection by DISCOM.
8. Once you get the commissioning report. Submit the bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal. You will receive your subsidy in your bank account within 30 days
