 The State and Central Governments introduce numerous schemes for people with disabilities. However, many citizens miss out on these benefits due to a lack of awareness or other reasons. To help this cause, the Government of India has started an initiative to create a database where one could find all the details regarding PwD thorough the creation of UDID (Unique Disability Identity Card). Through this online initiative, the online users can apply, check, download the disability card online.

The UDID, or Unique Disability ID, is a card issued to persons with disabilities by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. Possessing this card allows citizens to access government schemes designed for them. The government maintains a database of persons with disabilities, aiding in the implementation of various schemes. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment oversees the scheme’s execution. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply for a UDID, and upon successful application, a card will be provided, serving as an essential document to avail benefits from government schemes.

About Unique Disability ID Card

UDID sub scheme has a view of creating a National Database for Persons with Disabilities across the country. Under the UDID project, certificates of disability and Unique Disability Identity cards are issued to Persons with Disabilities through competent medical authorities notified by respective State Governments/Union Territories. The project aims to encourage transparency, efficiency in the system of delivering the government benefits to the person with disabilities.

 Eligibility Criteria for a UDID Card

The eligibility criteria for applying for a UDID (Unique Disability ID) Card are as follows:

  1. The applicant is a permanent citizen of India.
  2. There is no age limit to applying for a UDID ID Card.
  3. An applicant who is going to apply for the UDID card must is a disabled person.
  4. People holding a disability certificates are eligible for UDID Card
  5. A permanent residents of the country.
  6. To do UDID Card Registration, all necessary documents should be completed with the disabled citizen.

 How to apply for a UDID Card?

Here are the steps to apply for a UDID Card in India:

  1. Go the UDID web portal and click on regular link to register. Fill in Personal Details including Address, Disability details, Employment details, Identity details.
  2. Then, click on Apply Online for Disability Certificate using the PwD logs credentials.
  3. After entering details, people shall upload a colour passport photo and other important documents, such as Identity proof, Income Proof, SC/ ST/ OBC proof.
  4. Submit all data to CMO Office/ Medical Authority will verify all your data.
  5. Once documents verification is successful, CMO Office/Medical Authority will assign a specialist(s) for assessment.
  6. Then, a specialist doctor will assess disability of PwD and give an opinion on disability.
  7. A Medical Board follows this by reviewing the case and assigns disability percentage. CMO Office prepares Disability Certificate and generates UDID and Disability Certificate.
  8. UDID datasheet goes for UDID Card printing and UDID card  delivery takes place by post at address mention in online registration.
  9. Once applied, you can check the status of application by clicking on UDID card status on website.

Who can apply for a UDID Card?

A UDID card is only for those people who qualify as disabled person according to the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. The following list of disabilities are eligible:

Blindness Person suffers from total absence of insight; or visual acuity not exceeding 6/60 or 20/200 (Snellen) in the better eye with correcting lenses, or limitation of the field of vision subtending an angle of 20 degrees or worse.
Cerebral Palsy Non-progressive conditions of a person characterized by abnormal motor control posture resulting from brain insult or injuries occurring in the prenatal, perinatal or infant period of development.
Loco-motor Disability Disability of the bones, joints or muscles leading to substantial restriction of the movement of the limbs or any form of cerebral palsy.
Leprosy-cured Person who is cured of leprosy but is suffering from loss of sensation in hands or feet, as well as loss of sensation and paresis in the eye and eye-lid but with no manifest deformity
Mental Retardation Conditions of incomplete development of the mind of a person, which is especially characterized by the sub normality of intelligence.
Mental Illness Any mental disorder other than mental retardation.
Hearing Impairment A condition that results in loss of sixty decibels or more in the better ear in the conversational range of frequencies
